Data Architect

Remote, Remote
We are seeking a highly experienced and independent Lead Data Architect with deep expertise in the Healthcare Domain to spearhead a major Data Lake Transformation initiative. The successful candidate will be a pivotal leader, responsible for designing and implementing the foundational data architecture that will power our next generation of data and analytics capabilities. This role requires exceptional domain knowledge, strong technical acumen in the Microsoft Azure/Fabric ecosystem, and the ability to operate independently while regularly engaging with senior business and technology leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Architectural Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead the Data Lake Strategy: Drive the end-to-end design, implementation, and governance of the new enterprise Data Lake, leveraging the Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers).
  • Foundational Data Modeling: Architect and build a robust, scalable, and domain-aligned foundational data model within the Data Lake, specifically tailored to healthcare data standards and semantics.
  • Technology Stack Ownership: Serve as the Subject Matter Expert for the Microsoft data landscape, including Azure Data Services (e.g., Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure Data Factory) and the newly adopted Microsoft Fabric platform.
Domain & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Source System Interaction: Proactively engage with various source system business owners and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across the organization to gain an in-depth understanding of their operational data, domain context, and business processes.
  • Requirements Translation: Translate complex, disparate healthcare business requirements and data nuances into coherent, actionable technical designs and data models.
  • Senior Leadership Interaction: Effectively communicate project vision, progress, risks, and strategic architectural decisions to executive and senior management, acting as the primary technical point of contact for the initiative.
Technical Execution & Governance
  • Data Ingestion & Flow: Define optimal data ingestion strategies, ensuring high performance, reliability, and security of data flow from various source systems into the Data Lake.
  • Quality & Governance: Establish data governance frameworks, quality checks, and metadata management standards specific to regulated healthcare data (e.g., HIPAA compliance considerations).
  • Independent Delivery: Function with a high degree of autonomy, managing the architectural roadmap, design reviews, and technical oversight with minimal supervision, akin to a Director-level role.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience: Minimum of 10+ years of experience in Data Architecture, Data Modeling, or Data Engineering, with at least 3+ years in a lead or director-level capacity.
  • Healthcare Domain Expertise (Non-Negotiable): Deep and demonstrable knowledge of the healthcare industry, including understanding of standard healthcare data sets (e.g., Claims, EHR/EMR, Member/Patient data, Providers), common interoperability standards (e.g., FHIR, HL7), and regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Technical Stack: Expert-level proficiency with the Microsoft Azure Data Ecosystem is mandatory, including practical experience with:
    • Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS Gen2)
    • Azure Synapse Analytics or Databricks (or similar cloud data warehousing/processing tools)
    • Azure Data Factory (ADF)
    • Direct experience with or strong foundational knowledge of Microsoft Fabric is highly desirable.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders at all organizational levels.
